ayumi hamasaki - A SUMMER BEST (CD+DVD)
I'm back y'all!! After a one month hiatus because I was too busy preparing for university and living life as a student once again~ Definitely feels great to be back at school again instead of being chained down to the army. Freedom once more~!!
I apologize for not being able to blog as frequently nowadays because I just don't have enough time to! The assignments have been piling up since Week 1 and I'm still struggling to keep my head out of the water.
But~!! I shall blog today because I've finally gotten my hands on ayumi hamasaki's latest's summer compilation album - A SUMMER BEST!
Let's go~
What puzzles me is why a compilation album? In the past, she would release summer singles and I dare say that summer songs are definitely one of the major sellers in the industry (well, at least for me. :P) but why an album? Furthermore, it's not like there are many new songs packaged with this album - only 2 in fact - "Happening Here" and "You & Me".
Well, that's not to say that the other songs like the classic "BLUE BIRD", "independent", "fairyland", etc aren't good but come on now. ayumi hamasaki fans like myself would already have these songs in their arsenal of ayu goodness so why give us the same thing and make us pay a premium for it all over again? A little unfair, no?
But since it's ayumi hamasaki, I will buy it! But no thanks to avex for their cruel marketing strategies of using her name and brand to make innocent people like me buy things I already have...
Don't get me started on getting digital copies - I prefer the good ol' physical CDs so I can take photos of them!
Anyway, that's a long rant but the above photo is her CD+DVD cover. Looks gorgeous in my opinion but I prefer the CD-only photo. Go Google it! :D
As usual, I got the Hong Kong press of the album simply because I want the DVD to work with my DVD players and Mac. Here's the sticker on the shrink wrap and it describes this compilation album, like what are the new songs, what videos will be featured, etc. Nothing really special.
Unfortunately, the first press of the Hong Kong album doesn't come with the code that can be used online like the Japan press one. No clue what the code does but oh well...
I bought my album from HMV this time round instead of YesAsia because I was too lazy to wait for it to ship and besides, I don't have anything else to buy from the online retailer to qualify myself for the free shipping. Heads up though - if you're planning on getting this album from CD-Rama, it will cost you almost $5 more. Get it from HMV instead - cheaper!!
Anyway, here's the exhaustive track list for this compilation album. Well, for a summer album, it does pack a lot of ballads in DISC A. Yes, I wonder what inspired them to name their discs "DISC N" and "DISC A". Any ideas anyone? Leave your answers in the comment box please! I want to know~
This CD+DVD version obviously comes with a DVD but instead of the promotional videos, this DVD is packed with her live performances from a-nation and some of her other tours. If you're a hardcore ayu fan, you would probably have most of the video clips anyway but some of the clips are exclusive to this album (for instance, "blossom" performed at a-nation '10) only so it might be a good idea to get this to complete your discography.
Some of the tracks are featured as their original promotional videos as well, which I think a little redundant since the release of her "A CLIP BOX 1998 - 2011" which should already include most of the music videos. On the other hand, this is also the only album where you can get the video for her latest song "You & Me".
Like "Party Queen", A SUMMER BEST unfortunately only managed to chart on #2 on the Oricon chart. Sigh... Looks like the Empress of J-Pop is really slipping a little with Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi really fighting for her spot. Here's the album art without the sticker at the front. It's pretty decent but there's so much more that they could have done to make this album so much more appealing.
The insides of the jewel case consists of the lyric insert and the three discs. The discs are simple but I think they are actually quite nice compared to the leopard prints. I'm starting to get sick of leopard prints seriously. The composition of the photo on the lyric booklet is also more appealing than the cover - kinda hints that the content is more important than the cover.
The first page of the lyric insert. Don't you find her gorgeous?! The lyric booklet is filled with a reasonable amount of stunning photos but the creative concepts are more or less the same. Lack of budget because this is a compilation? I'm not very sure.
Anyway, in terms of the musical quality of this album, I would say that it's good even without listening to it because I know the songs already. DISC N features all the uplifting summer songs like "glitter", "Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~", etc. Whatever summer song you can think of will be featured here! Think of it as a playlist in a CD if you want.
DISC A features the moodier songs and it makes me wonder why they are even in a summer compilation in the first place. Perhaps summer also has it's darker sides? The song selection on DISC A is slightly weirder. I can understand why "HANABI" and "HANABI ~episode II~" made it to the list but songs like "monochrome" and "ANother song feat. URATA NAOYA"? These don't make sense considering that the singles that they were released on weren't exactly "summer" to begin with...
Maybe they are trying to recreate a "BLACK" vs "WHITE" again? Not sure...
Another stunning photo of ayumi hamasaki! Like I've said, no matter what happens, I will continue to support her because her past body of work has proven that she is capable of quality. Perhaps all she needs now is a break to rejuvenate her creative juices to create better works than before...
Well, that's all I have to say for her latest summer compilation. It's definitely not her best but it does feature some of her tried and tested songs to support this album. Plus, her new song "You & Me" is surprisingly quite good and catchy. In fact, I think this song alone, as well as the DVD of course, is good enough to justify my money spent on this album.
Overall, I'm not entirely excited about this album but neither am I too disappointed. I like it but don't necessarily love it.
Shall end here and get back to life as a student. I still have a whole list of assignments to do... Sigh~ Read more...
Namie Amuro - Uncontrolled (CD+DVD)
What a fantastic way to open to open a 20th anniversary album, Miss Amuro! This song has been stuck in my mind ever since I've listened to it for the very first time when I watched the DVD that came along with this album because it's so catchy.
And, this song, like 4 other songs on this album, is done fully in English!
"Uncontrolled" is her 9th studio album, following her previous album released more than 2 years back "Past < Future", released in Japan in June 27, 2012 and what can I say, it's fantastic!
Here's the cover of her latest creation (the Taiwan press) which was pieced at the beginning of the year after releasing 4 singles prior to this major release. Isn't she extremely gorgeous even without or with minimal make up on? Who would believe this Queen of Hip Hop is already a mom?
Here's the close up of the sticker pasted on the transparent plastic cover of the digipak album. I realized that her recent releases, the albums at least, are all in digipaks, making her the Queen of Digipaks as well but who can blame the production team? The digipaks are always so pretty!
Anyway, the sticker basically describes the album and the big "20" tells the world how she is celebrating her 20th year in the Japanese music industry - with this marvelous album packed with 13 great songs as well as a DVD featuring 11 music videos. That's as good as saying almost every song has a promotional video for it~!
The back of the digipak is also as stunning as well. Pardon the ugly PG sticker because I got it from Singapore's hmv for a chance to meet Namie Amuro in person but unfortunately, I didn't get it *sigh*. Maybe next time, I shall fly to Japan to find her personally! I'll continue dreaming...
Back to this dreamy-looking back of the digipak. Other than the unsightly sticker from Singapore's Board of Censorship (which I seriously find redundant), we have the sticker with the track list of the album stuck onto the plastic cover.
A close up of the track list. Basically, this album features all the songs from her previous four singles plus 4 brand new songs recorded specially for this album. For more information on the tracks, you can visit CDJapan or YesAsia for more details or her official site (link on the side of this blog) because I'm too lazy to type the obvious out here.
I wouldn't be doing this album justice without taking photos of it without the ugly plastic covering on, yes? Here it is! I say, after watching the DVD and listening to the entire album on the train today, I have to say that this is by far the best album I've listened to this year. Yes, I think it does win me over a little bit more than Queen of J-Pop, ayumi hamasaki's "Party Queen".
The rationale is simple - this album is coherent and sounds like a whole album. "Party Queen", on the other hand, explored different themes but got kinda stuck in the middle with the okay-okay ballads which I love but didn't tell a full story with the rest of the upbeat and sudden jazzy songs in the rest of the album. Nevertheless, it's by ayumi hamasaki so I love it anyway!!
What Namie did different to both Koda Kumi and ayumi hamasaki this time round is that out of 13 tracks, 5 were performed either fully in English or 80% in English and that makes a lot more sense to me because even though I understand a bit of Japanese, English still relates to me fully.
And can I say, Miss Amuro's English is actually good! At least we don't hear things like "Come on Twinkle why won't you crap your hands" by Miss Kumi...
The gorgeous back without the track list but that isn't a huge issue because they have the track list inside the digipak (more about it later!). The sticker on the plastic is merely for telling customers who have no clue (shame on them!) of the track list inside this amazing masterpiece.
"Uncontrolled" is definitely an apt name, considering that she went all out with her English songs, unafraid of how people may judge her because we all know, Japanese people aren't the best English speaking people because of the way they pronounce but honestly, I think their pronunciation is really adorable!
Even though she did say that she did not do the songs to reach to her international fans, I think she still did it well! Her real motive of doing them in English is simply because the songs are better done in that language. A creative choice maybe?
The spine of the album. I simply adore the font they used for this album! It's so pretty and classy, just like how she portrayed her almost "naked" self on the album. The "no make up" look really showing off her natural beauty and showing how she can still rock the world with her looks and music.
When you open up the digipak, you see the track list on the left - both for the CD and the DVD so you do not have to worry about losing the track list if you throw the plastic cover away. If it wasn't for the two songs without promotional videos, I think they could have just do with a single track list. It's a pity Namie didn't do what Koda Kumi did - have a promotional video for every single track. Come on! It's just 2 more videos~~
A close up of the track list. Want to know what some of my favorite tracks are so far? Here they are...~~
- In The Spotlight (TOKYO)
A fantastic upbeat song to open the album! The song is catchy and the lyrics are pretty inspirational. Even though it's only addressed to Tokyo, I bet her "Tokyo" is just a metaphor (and a word that actually fits the song anyway). My favorite song on the album so far~ So much so that it's actually my ringtone right now!! - NAKED
Just like how she portrayed herself on the album. She may be in this industry for 20 years but she still look fresh! NAKED is very "Namie Amuro" - I can't imagine anyone else who can do this hip hop genre better than the Queen herself. This song makes you want to sing "Naked~ Naked~" like a pervert, but in a good way for sure. - Hot Girls
"Hot girls make the world go round!!" One of the new songs that's done in English and I love the PV! She appears on stage, strutting down the runway in her long hair with those bangs, singing her heart out and dancing so fiercely! It's also extremely catchy and "hip hop"py. "Namie Amuro makes the world go round!!" - Break It
The first single of this album and even though it's been out for so long, I never actually went to listen to it because I don't have an original copy of the song. Yes, I rather not listen to something than to pirate it. But I do watch their PVs online but not this time. Another classic "Namie Amuro" song~ If I can summarize this album in one word, I would say "Catchy" because every other song gets stuck in your mind like chicken in between your teeth. It's extremely hard to get over them excellent songs, like this one!! - Fight Together
One of the first few songs that I listened to before I got the album because it was the theme song for the anime "One Piece". I'm not an anime fan but when I know one of the big threes (ayu, Koda Kumi and Namie) does a theme song, I would go find it out and listen to it. "Fight Together" is a motivational song with a very summer feel. Not one of her classic styles but really inspiring nevertheless~ - Tempest
What can I say? She opened the album with such energy and closed it with a fierce ballad in the form of this storm. "Tempest" was release as a single prior to the album bur I've never heard it too until I listened to the album and boy is it good! She sings so effortlessly and soothingly that even though the title seem chaotic and windy, she brings such inner peace to you. Excellent way to close the album!

MLM? Kiss my puwet, I'm going shopping...
"MLM (Multi-level marketing) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for the sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation." - Source of definition: Wikipedia
Yes. I was stupid enough to fall into their trap of MLM and went for their "interview" this afternoon and until now, I'm still kicking my own puwet for wasting my precious transportation fees to go listen to some bullshit.
Honestly, I don't know how to start this entry because there's so much fury inside me that I want to vent but again, the purpose of this entry is to share with you my personal experiences of how nasty MLM is and how to avoid them and perhaps, give you some tips on how to make a classy exit (like what I did today).
Actually wanted to make this a vlog but I'm too shy to go on camera so I'll stick to words, yes? :P I apologize for the wordy entry but I shall keep it as entertaining and bitchy as possible for your reading pleasure.
Let me give you a brief outline of what this possibly long entry will be like:
1. WHAT ON EARTH IS MLM?
This may work for regular salesman but MLM sales people will not take "NO" as an answer.
Well, in case the opening definition bored you or you want it in simpler terms, MLM is how some people sell things, just like how some promoters let you try cocktails at Cold Storage and ask you how it tastes (the job I've been doing for the last weekend).
But, the difference is that in MLM, a pretty successful model in the States but unfortunately, not a viable business model in Singapore because the sales people are mostly people who are hard sellers. In other words, they don't care if you need the product. They just want to close the deal, earn your money and hope to get rich.
That's not all. MLM also means these "sales" people recruit other people so that A) They get more customers to buy the products they don't really need and B) They get more underlings to close deals on their behalf so these "sales" people earn a commission out from their underlings.
Evil, no?
In other words, think of MLM in Singapore like a pyramid. When the underlings earn, the higher ups also earn. Sounds good if you're a higher up eh? But sadly, it's not easy to reach there but you wouldn't want to anyway unless you like to sell things to people that doesn't add value to their life, no matter how hard they try to convince you otherwise.
Worse of all, some MLM companies require you to buy their products and stock them so you get to sell them. That means, you are paying to work and to me, that's just bull. You are meant to be paid, not the other way round. What if you don't sell them? You're the sucker while the higher ups get their commission anyways.
Why do I hate them so much? Well, other than the fact that they are just pure shitty, I think it's not ethical to be conning people's money. Not to say that all the products they sell are phony but really, I do not believe in selling things people do not want just to earn from them. Furthermore, I do not want to be to a pawn in which I work my ass off while the higher ups earn their commissions. NO WAY!!
Plus, their culture is horrible. It's all about "me, myself and I" and not about the customer. In sales, it's all about the customer but in MLM, you're more concerned about your profits. Heck if the customer don't need a water filter, you're selling it anyway for your own profit. Who doesn't work for their own food, yes? But the way they HARD SELL products to people is just revolting and irritates me.
On top of that, they like to make it sound as though it's really easy to earn money in MLM by drawing you diagrams, charts and other beautiful things that you probably won't understand anyway during their briefings/interviews. The truth is, there's no such thing as easy money on this planet. You want to make a living, you jolly well work your ass off for it. And therefore, I do not support the notion of the higher ups earning commissions when you are the one working. Yes, you do earn but can you live with your conscious of selling your customer a product that they will regret buying?
So, in conclusion to this rather dry segment of this entry, MLM is nonsense. MLM wants you to get your family members to buy things they don't need. MLM is about revealing your friends' contacts to these "higher ups" so that they can brainwash them to "work" for them for their own freaking profits.
Remember, it's not ethical to give out your friends contacts to these companies because you aren't respecting your friends' privacy and they will turn nasty on you.
VERY NASTY ON YOU...!! (Don't say I never warn you, "friend".)
Even if you are my friend, I won't believe you anymore.
2. WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED TODAY?
Now, there's the interesting part of this entry because I bet you want to know what the hell happened today to make me feel like it's blog-worthy. Story telling time, children!! Grab your teddy bears~
So few weeks back, I was job hunting and I came across an advertisement that looked something like this...
"So, how difficult can it be to help at a showroom right? And look~ The pay is pretty attractive as well! I should totally just SMS the person and ask for the job immediately!!"
Really, I was that stupid to be going through that process and because of that, I ended up going for the stupid MLM talk this afternoon at 2:00pm at Bugis Village. Actually, I had a really bad feeling about going for this interview because part of me knew that it was probably going to be MLM but I couldn't really confirm but after going there, I was sure.
And to anyone reading this, I hope you do not fall into the same "sweet" trap as I did because transportation fees nowadays can kill you. Shall go into how to spot bogus job adverts in a short while. Let me have my moment to rant~
2:00pm. Hot afternoon. I stood outside KFC, waiting for the interviewer to pick me up, wondering why he refused to tell me the exact location as well as the name of the company. Was chatting with my IS mates on Whatsapp, telling them that I felt like I've just boarded the Pirate's ship but nevertheless, since I was already there, might as well just go there for the scoop.
So this gentleman in a formal shirt came over and shook my hand. There was also a lady who was waiting for this gentleman, apparently also job seeking. After the formalities, we walked down the aisle right of KFC and up this flight of stairs to the "showroom".
An impression of how the "showroom" looks like. Looks pretty normal eh? Mosaic-ed to uphold the integrity of the company of this office. Image grabbed off the Internet - shall not name source.
Yes, he admitted it was MLM and I announced publicly in front of him and the lady that I'm extremely against MLM simply because I do not believe in selling products to customers if they don't want it. The hard sell tactics are unethical and despicable. The lady also hates MLM because she used to work for one of these companies. Good for her! It was 2 against 1 back then...
After the failed attempt of brainwashing us, saying that this company is different, blah blah blah, he asked if we were interested in going for their product presentation held in another room. I said I'll take a look at the product (well, I was stupid) but the girl immediately took this chance to say that she is not interested and she left. Should have done that and left too!!
Okay. So I stupidly agreed to enter the presentation room and there was already a presentation ongoing. There were approximately 15 other "victims" inside the room, listening to the product presentation. Well, being the bad boy that I am, instead of paying attention, I was busy Whatsapp-ing, slapping my own face for being so stupid to fall into this trap.
Anyway, the product was some water filter/purifier-something that's supposed to make your water "healthier" and blah blah blah. Like I said, I wasn't paying attention so I couldn't really recall. I remember there was another time in Poly when one of my good friend actually brought me to one of these MLM companies and they were selling the exact same thing so I knew that I've been "once bitten, twice shy" already.
Here's the interesting part now. What made me so annoyed.
During the presentation, the female presenter was saying that the water they are using is so much better because of this and that, this and that. First experiment she did was to add some tea leaves into two glasses of water - one being normal tap water and the other being their filtered "water". We all know that you need to use hot water to brew tea yes? But this filtered "water" magically allowed the flavors of the tea to seep into it, almost like the water was something corrosive. Scary eh?
Then, there was this experiment on the pH value (how acidic/basic) of the water samples were. She dripped some universal indicator into tap water and some into the "magic water". Before I reveal the results, let's take a look at this chart. This chart sure brings back memories of secondary school chemistry/science lessons, no?
Universal Indicator Chart Source: http://mscjackson.great-teacher.net/assignments%208th/chemistry/universal_indicator_chart.htm
And boy did I shop! I bought 2 shirts from Uniqlo but that's beside the point. I met up with Raven at her new work place and I bitched to her about what happened. While waiting for her to go for her break, the gentleman who brought me there called and had the cheeks to ask, "Eh you left already?" I gave him a short and sweet answer, "I have no interest in your products at all." And I hung up.
Sorry gentleman but you're working for the wrong company and like I've said before in one of my tweets, if you MLM me, be prepared to see the bitchiest side of me.
(A.K.A. SCAMS in my book at least)
Reminder again: NEVER EVER pay to work. That defeats the purpose of a job.
Pay: $900-$1.5K.
Full or part time position available.
Age limit: 18-25 yrs old.
Singaporean only.
SMS to ???????? for more details
- The pay is too good to be true. Be realistic. No one will pay you a lot if you do not do your job well nor have the proper qualifications.
- They do not give you a proper address nor disclose the company name - they didn't in my case, twice. They don't want you to check on them to see what company they are because if you know that they are MLM, you wouldn't turn up anyway. See, even they know that they have a bad reputation.
- Vague job descriptions. For instance, if they do not even tell you that you're working as what, selling what product, etc, then forget it. Why are they hiding it from you if they are guilt-free? What's so shameful about selling a health product unless A) it doesn't even work, B) you're an MLM company. You should never be ashamed of your products if you want to sell them and never be ashamed of the company you're working for because if you are, the customers won't trust you anyway.
- Confirmed positions immediately. If you are confirmed a position immediately via the SMS or phone calls, it's a fake for sure. Which employer will hire someone they don't know unless they are extremely desperate or they are just preying on your money?
- Promised "manager" roles or other nicer names immediately. Again, which employer would do that? These are the words that they use to entice people to apply for that position and fall into the trap so that the victims will be sucked dry buying the useless products of the MLM companies.
- They tell you it's a "briefing", not an "interview". A briefing means you're confirmed the job and they are going to teach you how to do it. An interview is a process where your prospect employer have a look at you and your resume to determine whether you are suited for the job or not. When you hear "briefing", it's a sign to either not respond to the message or hang up the phone - unless you want to be a victim to MLM.
- Tell them you're not a child and ask them to get off your back.
- Go to the toilet and exclaim that it's too dirty and you refuse to use it and would like to use one out of the office
- Use it and walk to the exit instead of back to the room like how I did it
- And if the person asks, "Why why why?", just tell the person a random trivia like "The product sucks" and exit. Stunning the person definitely works.
